Dr. Schindler of Eastern Shore Pet Hospital in Fairhope, AL works with the Fairhope Cat Coalition, a 501c3 non-profit organization, to humanely reduce the number of stray and feral cats who suffer neglect in Fairhope. He serves on the Fairhope Cat Coalition's Board of Directors and volunteers his time and expertise to spay and neuter the cats. He also provides the cats with food, shelter, and care until they are adopted or returned to their colonies.
The Fairhope Cat Coalition's mission is to stabilize, manage and maintain healthy colonies of feral cats in Fairhope, Alabama and to educate the public on the benefits of Trap, Neuter and Return (TNR) in feral cat management.
The Fairhope Cat Coalition has its beginning with concerned citizens who began feeding cats and kittens that were abandoned in several public areas in Fairhope. In the year 2000, several citizens began to formalize the feeding program to ensure the cats were feed on a regular basis. In conjunction with the Baldwin County Humane Society and local area veterinarians (including Dr. Schindler), the group began a program to humanely trap the cats for testing, vaccinations and neutering model on one in other parts of the county. When the City of Fairhope formally recognized the feral cat colony at the city park in October 2000, the local feral cat feeders formally organized to become the Fairhope Cat Coalition.
