American Humane Awards $500 Emergency Grant to the Humane Society of Central Arizona

Look At This Little Girl!
A winter storm brought harmfully high winds to Gila County, Ariz., Monday night, causing major damage to the Humane Society of Central Arizona (HSCA) in Payson. The American Humane Association has awarded the HSCA a $500 Red Star Animal Emergency Services™ grant to cover the shelter’s insurance deductible so repairs can begin.

No animals were injured, but the winds ripped off roofing covering 10 dog kennels. In addition, two evaporative coolers were destroyed. Damage to some of the electrical wiring left some wires exposed and electricity out in parts of the shelter. A storage shed was also demolished. The shelter houses approximately 60 dogs.

“We hope that our grant will help them with some of the expenses they face,” said Debrah Schnackenberg, vice president of American Humane’s Animal Protection Division. “We know that the Humane Society of Central Arizona will be working toward the goal of building a new shelter, and we hope that this money will assist the animals in having a safe place to live until they find their forever homes.”

American Humane is currently seeking additional funds to be able to provide grants to organizations like HSCA when unforeseeable disasters put animals at risk; grants are available based on resources and the generosity of the organization’s donors.
