Which dog can swim fastest, retrieve quickest, eat a burger fastest? Four-legged friends will compete against the “Canine Michael Phelps” in water sprints, dock diving and burger eating contests along the banks of Perdido Bay this Saturday.
The Baldwin County Humane Society (BARC!) is hosting the second annual Cove Dog Olympics on October 10, 2009, at Pirate's Cove Yacht Club in Josephine, AL. Registration starts at 10:00am; first event is at 11:00am.
Mike Healy, Cove Dog Olympics Chairman, commented “The World Record Holders, Josie and Tiki, are returning to defend their titles. Find out if your dog has the heart of an Olympic champion and can unseat the gold medal winners from last year.”
First competition is the Water Sprint down a 166 ft course. The dog will need two “coaches”, one to hold the dog at the launch point until the judge blows the whistle, the second in the water at the end point of the sprint. World Record Holder is Josie, a 7-year old Black Lab, in 22 seconds.
Dock Diving is the second contest. Dive ratings will be from 0.0 (dog refuses to get wet) to 10.0 (dog does a back flip in mid air before catching stick/ball/other). World Record Holder is Josie with an 8.2 score.
Final event is Cove Burger Eating and is limited to canine athletic competition. Tiki, a 4-year old English Mastiff, will be defending her World Record for downing an entire burger in 2.76 seconds.
Willie Bean Roscoe P Coltrane, Honorary BARC Board Member, promises to be impartial when he officiates.
All events are conducted one dog at a time; $5.00 donation to BARC for each event your dog enters. (Its free to spectate.)
